Newport's first “Green Drive-In” debuted in Ballard Park's Quarry Meadow in 2006. Each Summer Friends of Ballard Park hosts outdoor movie screening reminiscent of the days of the drive-in ... only its totally green - no cars or gas needed and lots of green space! Movie goers are invited to bring a blanket or lawn chair and picnic dinner to Ballard Park's three acre quarry meadow and enjoy a night at the movies. Thanks to generous sponsors MOVIES ON THE ROCKS is another free series offered in Newport's Only Nature Preserve.

The 2011 MOVIES ON THE ROCKS series featured three screenings and was supported by $3,000 "Production Sponsor" Cox Communications, $1,500 "Power Sponsor" Citizens Bank and $500 "Popcorn Sponsors" A Market, Eye Health Vision Centers, Keenwah and Stagecraft Sound & Lighting. This year's screenings attracted our largest attendance to date with 369 people attending the August 10th screening of The Wizard of Oz; 302 at Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory on August 17th and 325 at Shrek on August 24th.
