Competition was steep at the 2nd Annual Molly Finn Battle of the Bands Saturday, July 19th, 2008. Eight bands vied for recording time at local studios. They were cheered on by more than 550 event attendees.

Newport-based Vejadu took first place. As part of their prize eighteen year olds Julian Ciany and Fritz Drayton plus nineteen year olds Sam Moehrke and Teddy Nabozny will perform a concert in Spring 2009 at Ballard Park and received a full day of recording time with engineer Steve Rizzo at Stable Sound Studio in Portsmouth, RI. This was the band’s second appearance at the Molly Finn Battle of the Bands — they received second place at last year’s competition.

Surf guitar band Cliffs & Bangers nabbed second place. Other competitors included Anertia, Phil N Crew, Off Target, Bloody Knuckles, Sidewinder and The Mike Irving Band.

Our panel of judges included Jim Quinn, booker at the Newport Blues Cafe, musician Mark Quinn, Brikhaus Studio owner Scott Rancourt, musician Kate Dutton, Newport Mercury reporter Matt Keefer and musician and budding sound technician Ollie Amerigian.

Dozens of volunteers ensured the day ran smoothly. New this year was the “Kid’s Corner” were little ones could have their face painted and participate in various activities like hoola hooping, bubble blowing and sun printing.

Also new this year was an exhibition of artwork created by Rogers High School students under the direction of teacher Barbara Wunderler. Students created sculptures made from recycled materials of musical related items like guitars, musical notes and microphones. Students also painted banners of people dancing which were hung in the quarry meadow.

After emcees Kate Perrotti and Bob Sullivan announced the winners, local drummer LeRoy White closed the event with a drumming circle which was open to one and all.

Generous sponsorships, donations and program advertising off set costs associated with the event and will help to fund the Vejadu’s Spring 2009 concert. Many thanks to all those people who made this event a tremendous success.
