EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Following are lessons teachers can opt to have our outdoor educator offer to visiting groups. Teachers are also welcome to utilize their lessons in the park themselves. Call 401.619.3377 for more information or to book a visit to Ballard Park.
PRIMARY (K - 2nd Grade) LESSONS Click on any lesson title to read the lesson plan
LESSON DURATION OBJECTIVE
Animal or Plant? 1.5 hours

Differentiate between living and nonliving. Be able to tell that plants are living and usually make their own food but can not move around and that animals can not make their own food but can move around. Observe Ballard Park and make comparisons of animals and plants.

Animal Habitats or Plant? 1.5 hours Students will be able to differentiate between living and nonliving. Students will be able to define a habitat. Expose students to the different types of animals and habitats at Ballard Park.

Inspect an Insect 20 minutes
To look closely at one insect to see its structure and adaptations.

Insects 1 hour Learn the anatomy of an insect and have the children discover for themselves that insects have three pairs of legs.

INTERMEDIATE (3rd - 5th Grade) LESSONS
Camouflage 1.5 hours Students will make observations and predictions. Students will identify variables and describe relationships between them.

Camouflage Paper Clips 15 minutes

Learn how camouflage can help animals survive.

Eat and Run 15 minutes To experience the benefits of living in a herd for safety from predators.

Leaf Rubbing 40 minutes To observe different patterns of veins in a variety of leaves.

Meet A Tree 25 minutes To examine and record observations about a particular tree.

Milkweed Race 10 minutes To have fun and see how far a seed can travel with a little hot air.

Owl and Mouse 15 minutes
To learn about the owl and its ability to use the hearing sense.

Owl Pellets 30 minutes To learn how an owl's digestive system works.

Pebble Pass 10 minutes To examine rocks using the sense of touch.

Snack Track 25 minutes To experience the roles of both predator and prey through a game of hiding and searching.

Spotted Turtle 25 minutes Students will learn about habitats, about destruction of habitats and the impact of destruction.

Who Am I? 15 minutes To determine what their animal is by asking questions.
